Are you struggling with anxiety, panic attacks, or trauma? Have you tried talk therapy, but found that your symptoms persisted? If you are looking for a way to recover from trauma, EMDR may be the solution for you.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a well-researched, effective psychotherapy procedure that has been shown to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life situations, such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders.

How Is EMDR Therapy Unique?

EMDR therapy does not require a detailed discussion of the painful issue or the completion of homework in between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on modifying your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, allows the brain to go through its natural healing process.

The goal of EMDR treatment is to process unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than conventional psychotherapies.

What Are The Effects Of EMDR Therapy On The Brain?

Our brains have a built-in mechanism for resolving painful memories and situations. The amygdala (the warning system for stressful events), the hippocampus (which aids learning, including memories of safety and danger), and the prefrontal cortex all communicate in this process (which analyzes and controls behavior and emotion). While traumatic events can often be managed and resolved on their own, they may not be processed without assistance.

Our natural fight, flight, or freeze responses are all part of our stress response. When the suffering from a traumatic experience persists, the upsetting images, thoughts, and feelings can generate an overwhelming sensation of being “stuck in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process traumatic memories, allowing normal healing to resume. Although the event is recalled, the fight, flight, or freeze response from the initial occurrence is no longer present.
